I have been struggling to write new pieces for my blog. I was stuck on the “science and resilience” theme I chose. While I have a chemistry background most of what seems worth blogging about has nothing to do with being a scientist, but in being human. I realize that my values are not aligned with the promise of the blog: “Dive with me into the intersections of trauma and personal growth as a scientist”.
While I enjoy most laboratory work, I am not passionate about being a scientist. That is not news to me, and I am okay with that. I came across Dr. John Demartini’s 13 questions to determine what I truly value. My mind was blown! I had never seen values explained in such a methodical manner and I was quite intrigued.
I always hear people say that you must know what you value but most of what I had in mind were from conforming to society and what I fantasized valuing. These 13 questions helped me distill what I value vs what I think I value. I can see my interests and goals more clearly. My answers were not earth shattering but made me realize that certain things I thought I valued do not show up in my life. The questions themselves feel independent; but when looking at all the answers, they show a pattern. For me: health, food and personal growth were amongst my top answers.
Self-reflection has been one of my superpowers. It helps me understand why myself or someone else potentially displayed certain behaviors. I got interested in psychology for peace of mind. I was tired of spending hours of ruminating and fawning over situations and found podcasts and posts by psychologists on social media that helped me navigate my world more clearly. Therapy and 12-step programs have also been a huge part of my healing journey and I am grateful for all the resources.
I feel most comfortable focusing my writing around my values. Therefore, moving forward, I will be share more on my growth without the limitations of science and resilience.
